En un pueblo, dos criaturas son bautizadas el mismo día. Justo Ramírez cacique de San Andrés y su amada esposa Margarita, bautizan a su primogénito Alejandro con toda la pompa posible y la asistencia de casi todo el pueblo.

En cambio, la pequeña Alfonsina es bautizada por su tío en una capillita sin más presencia que Rigoberto y Francisca Valdés, sus padres, y su tía Gertrudis.
